Feisty Bento #352: 'shroom(s)

IMG_8877.JPG

One portobello parmesan - mmm, with a toasted & buttered English muffin on the side, cut in half to squish in.

Mmm, that was good.  Delicious... and filling.

Feisty Bento #351: Seeing Doubles?!?!

IMG_8855.JPG

Yes, it is indeed more of the same, really just the rest of what I'd bought, and it is so delicious, so good, I can't even explain it.  Mmm.  It's kind of good I don't work in Midtown because I'd be at Woorijip all the time!!!  Wait, I already am, sort of (been too busy lately to go up there on my way home after work).  Hehehe.  Delicious.

Gimbap
Zucchini pancakes (trying to come up with a way to make these myself... think I saw a recipe on Just Bento, actually!)
Spicy chicken

Ahhh.

Feisty Bento #350: Woorijip Goodies!

IMG_8845

Gimbap (four pieces, stacked up), spicy chicken, and 'zucchini pancakes' from Woorijip

IMG_8846

Here's another angle because I didn't think you could see the pancakes well enough.  Except you can't see them that well at this angle, either, lol.

BTW -- I already cooked with my new toy, and the first step was 'render bacon' and while delicious, totally bento-worthy, it didn't make it into bento, because I ate it all.  Hahaha.  Well, also because I had this stuff from Woorijip, so I wanted to finish that and it was enough for bento so that was that, and what I made stayed as dinner, delicious dinner.  :)  You'll find out what soon enough...

Feisty Bento #349: New Kitchen Toy!

IMG_8821.JPG

Black olives; spaghetti tossed with remaining garlic-scape-pesto ;)

Sooo... what with father's day being this past weekend... and y'know, I was feeling kind of bummed, but we don't need to get into the personal details of my life, do we?  Nawww.... Well, I bought myself a present, cuz there were father's day sales going on and I wanted to take advantage of one.  There you go.  I caved and finally bought an enameled cast iron pot, though I still stoutly refuse to buy a Le Creuset one.  Ridiculous.  This cost me, including tax and all, $65.  Hmph.

IMG_8820.JPG

The first thing to cook in it?  Whatever it is, the first step will be "render fat off bacon" LOL

Feisty Bento #348: Homemade Delicious

IMG_8800.JPG

I know it isn't exactly bento-style, but it was homemade, and I took it in for lunch, and it was damn delicious.  I've been feeling under the weather for about a week now (my throat is bothering me; it started off dry & scratchy then went to worse until I practically lost my voice, and it is still just petering out now... waiting to completely feel better...).  So the other day, not sure how to use some of my CSA goodies, I just threw a bunch of things in a pot and called it vegetable soup.  It was really good, slightly spicy, and super soothing to my sore, dry throat.  I swear I felt better in just minutes after the first bowl.  Too bad I finished it so quickly.  (This is only a portion of it.)

Surprisingly, I heated this to simmering in the morning, then portioned it into this container, shut the container, and wrapped it up in a plastic bag for transport... and it was still warm by lunch time, 6 hours later!  Weird, right?  I didn't put it in anything insulated, either!

So, just "veggie soup" is in there.

Feisty Bento #347: Utter Delight

IMG_8794.JPG

Pickle spears along the top of the box; a few marinated artichoke hearts along the left side of the box; and then the rest is once again, not pretty but definitely delicious garlic scape tossed chicken & potatoes

Mmm, more deliciousness.

The weather has been raining and not raining and raining and just very odd here in NYC.  We're reaching record highs of rainfall and there's still 8 days left in June!  Summer weather has appeared very briefly, very fleetingly, and I'm not sure when it'll actually feel like summer - the only summery part of the weather lately is the humidity, which kills me.  I really detest humidity.  I detest walking a block and my face suddenly shiny as all get out.  It's even worse when it's not really hot - you step outside and you're like "I might need a sweater" so you take one and shove it in your giant tote and then walk a block and suddenly you're hot and sweaty and confused.  What gives?!  It's like... it's not HOT, just that it's warm enough that with the humidity, any sort of quick walking (which is nearly the only kind of walking in which I engage - I'm a New Yorker, after all!) will raise your body temp faster than you thought, and you will just be uncomfortable and crazy and just annoyed.

Humidity makes for a very grumpy Yvo.

Feisty Bento #346: Looks Aren't Everything

IMG_8773.JPG

I know it ain't pretty, but looks aren't everything.  Didn't your momma teach you that!  ;)

Half of an orange bell pepper (which was 99c/lb. for some reason, unheard of ridiculously cheap!!!  Now why did I only buy 3?) stuffed with potato/chicken tossed with garlic scape pesto; potatoes, chicken, chopped up bell pepper tossed with garlic scape pesto and a small spoonful of mayo to make it a little creamy.

The funny thing is, it tastes like mashed potatoes mixed in with everything.  I've never been good at telling what kind of potatoes are good for what, so I had red bliss potatoes - which I thought were good for salads but maybe not since I usually mash them? LOL - peeled and cubed them, then boiled them, and when I added it to the bowl with the chicken and began tossing, they started crumbling a bit.  Some of the bigger cubes stayed whole, but I'm not hating, I won't lie, it was delicious anyway.  (I read a recipe once for mashed potatoes that had mayo in it; while I don't personally go that route, I could see it working, especially now, after eating this.)  So good.  SO GOOD.

Recipe for garlic scape pesto coming soon (mine is slightly different from the ones making the rounds mostly because I am a cheap bastard)!  It's easy and delicious.  Well, easy if you're not using a hand blender's cup attachment, which wants to keep jamming so you have to keep opening it and spooning things around to make it mix, dammit.  Ahem.  Not that I would know.  Riiight.

Feisty Bento #345: Tin Foil Surprise

IMG_8769.JPG

Hello!  My extra-delicious lunch!  The tin-foil wrapped portion is kind of a surprise, but if you're a Facebook friend of mine, you might already know what it is.  Shhh if you do.  (It relates to a certain status message I posted the other day with a link to a certain GI Joe video... lol)  I'll be posting the entire method and all as a Recipe Friday (remember those?! *innocent whistling* haha) in a few weeks, so stay tuned to Feisty Foodie for that!  You'll want to see it... I promise!

The bottom box is just more mixed greens with honey Vidalia dressing (store bought).

Mmm, baby!

Feisty Bento #344: Leftover Lunch!

IMG_8745.JPG

Lunch made easy with leftovers!

"Mixed greens" topped with leftover steak, and a small container of honey Vidalia onion dressing (which I squished into the box for transport, so it was all quite compact).

And it was delicious!  The steak was leftover from the infamous $15 steak sandwiches at Yankee Stadium (yeah, I know that's a Mets helmet cup... they were playing the Mets... and yes, I plan on posting about my experience at the stadium, that post goes live in early July on Feisty Foodie!  Look for it!).  For my opinion on it all - just gonna have to wait :)

Mmm, baby!

Feisty Bento #343: CSA Goodies!!!

IMG_8679.JPG

Playing around with my CSA goodies...

Spaghetti with olives, kale, spinach, shredded carrots, red pepper flakes (gave it a nice heat!), and some cheese grated on top - oh and some lemon zest/juice!  :)

Really delicious and filling.  Actually it was REALLY yummy... I want to make this again :)

Feisty Bento #341: Another gym bento

IMG_8544

miso mushrooms; baked ziti; garlic/basil green beans

Another gym day bento.  Not bad though, pretty good for after a good hard run at the gym... and the apple before will prevent me from starving.  Yeah, it's also smaller - this box is 360ml.

Feisty Bento #339: Gym day bento

IMG_8542

roasted asparagus (not just tips, the 'bodies' are underneath); baked ziti; garlic/basil green beans

If you have really keen eyes, you may notice this bento is smaller than my others... because it's a gym day!  Well, I'll be running, anyway... I need to get back in that habit, I've been falling out and the pudge is returning, boo.  (Probably because I've also been eating more, because of the whole not-bento'ing thing, so it's a huge vicious mix of badness!)  So, smaller bento.  I have an apple for before the run, then I'll eat this afterwards :)

Feisty Bento #338: Back in the swing

IMG_8540

roasted asparagus (not just tips, the 'bodies' are underneath); miso mushrooms; roasted bell pepper (underneath is hiding a roasted piece of zucchini); garlic/basil green beans; baked ziti (and a stray green bean I tucked in there to fill some space)

Mmm, look at that.  Starting to get back into this bento thing... testing out a new method... we'll see how this goes :)

Feisty Bento #337: Exhaustion

IMG_8541

roasted asparagus (not just tips, the 'bodies' are underneath); portobello/red peppers sauteed lightly; garlic/basil green beans

I am really, really exhausted today, more tired than I've been in quite a long while.  Staying up late to pack bento killed me for today... ha...
