Feisty Lunch

IMG_0007.JPG

It looks like I took this photo at night, but I assure you, it was something like 7:30 in the morning.  Yep, that's how dark it was this morning.  It's so difficult to wake up in the morning when it's dark out and chilly - my building hasn't yet turned on the heat, and I don't really blame them, since the temperature is at that point where it's a delicate yo-yo; it might be 40 tonight but tomorrow it will be 70.  As a shareholder with an actual vested interest in our bottom line financially, I don't want the heat on if it's going to make my apartment unbearably hot on days that are unseasonably warm!

IMG_0012.JPG

In any case, I know I just said yesterday that I wouldn't have bento this week - and I don't! - but that first pic is my lunch for today.  An awesome Greek salad from my local diner ... so, last night, I had barely any time between work and class, and I needed to eat (long story but I basically forgot to eat lunch...), and in a fit of inspiration, decided to utilize Tower Diner's online ordering system to its utmost potential by placing an order before I left work at 5:30 to be picked up at 6:45.  This all worked out great and I had dinner in my grubby lil hands easily, but I took it a step further by ordering the above salad for the specific purpose of bringing it for lunch today.  Even better!!!  Perfect.  I've had their Greek salad before - in fact, easily a dozen times this year alone (BF really likes this diner so we go there pretty often) - and really really like how they do it, except for two things: they use very fishy anchovies so I always request it without the anchovies, and they use olives with pits, which means I eat one or two and then leave the rest out.  (When I make Greek salad, I use pitted olives!)  Otherwise, they have a great version here.  Yum!

I also just really wanted an excuse to post these pics of Keywee.

IMG_0011.JPG

The bestest boyfriend in the entire whole world did me the greatest favor the other night.  I'm a ball of stress lately (not to be confused with a stress ball; if you try to squeeze me, my latent violent tendencies might rear up and poke out and b*tchslap you...), with having no time, and very little time to spend with my absolute darling puppy (okay, she's 7 and a half, but still will always be my puppy), and just... feeling guilty... well, I had no time to take her to get groomed because I was either at work or school during their business hours.  So my boyfriend picked Keywee up at 11pm on Monday... took her to her 2pm appointment on Tuesday... and dropped her back off at 11pm on Tuesday.

Yes.  Yes, he did.  Yet another reason why I love this man.  Yes indeed.

And can I tell you?  24 hours without her and I missed her more than I thought possible.  Missed her climbing into my lap while I studied, her trying to convince me that I only need one hand to study and that I should use my free hand to pet her; missed her following me around as I went from room to room looking for something, or just following me around in general.  Missed her snuggling right into my belly when I lay down to sleep, missed her climbing up my chest when I'm half-lying down watching TV.  Missed her.

Now she's back where she belongs, with me, in my arms, and I can't even enjoy her that much because it's been rush, rush, rush, everywhere, all the time.  Ugh.  I realized, however, that she is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE photography subject in the world.  Even though she wiggles and sometimes won't stay still for my non-flash photography.  Even though she's not something I photograph then immediately consume in deliciousness.  Even though sometimes she just doesn't want to photograph.

She is my absolute favorite.

Baby I love you, and I'm sorry I waited so long to groom you and made you all uncomfortable.  You smell delicious and look wonderful, and Mommy will always, always love you best out of anything in the world.  Always.

Ahem.

Also, those photos were indeed taken directly after the salad photo.  Still so dark, right?  Ugh.

Think outside the lunchbox!

Feisty Radio Silence...

I am tired, my darling readers.  I am so, so very tired.  By that, I don't mean I'm tired of talking about my life (HAH!) or my food (double HAH!).  I just mean, I need sleep and I need an extra, oh, I'll take an extra 3 hours in each day.  See?  I'm not greedy.  I'll take just 3 more hours in a day, during which I could cook, clean up what I've cooked, study,...

This past weekend marks the first weekend, like, in I can't even tell you how long, that I didn't cook a single thing.  Leftovers made dinner on Friday night while studying for my exam on Saturday.  Saturday was mostly spent in school, then finally finally (would you tolerate seeing your girlfriend, whom you'd already been seeing only about once a week, even less than that? when you live in the same damn city and even the same damn borough?!) seeing the boyfriend for a bit, and Sunday was spent in Brooklyn at the 3rd Avenue Festival, part of the time at Robicelli's judging their sandwich contest (it turns out, I'm REALLY good at judging! Who'd have thought?!).  I had little time to breathe, let alone stand in my kitchen and whip up stuff to eat, even if it was only for the rest of the week.  (Well, I did manage to stand in my kitchen for an hour on Saturday, cleaning, so that was good.  Even so, I'm not done yet, there's still stuff to clean, ughhh!  When this happens, I sometimes put an embargo on my kitchen, ie, "No cooking until it's fully clean!" which really, really sucks for me, and I believe I'm about to do so once again.  My kitchen is filthy.)

IMG_0142.JPG

I've mentioned my school schedule before, and it's not that I'm complaining - I registered for my own classes, created my own schedule, and decided I could handle it.  And I can.  I know I can handle it.  It's the having-no-time-for-anything-else-but-school-and-schoolwork/studying that is killing me (I'm taking an English class and another writing-intensive class, and yet another class in one of the subjects that are very difficult for me).  I've never been that great with time management, but usually have had enough of it that it didn't matter if I lost a little sleep here and there.  Now, because I'm not budgeting my minutes wisely, things are slipping through the cracks and I hate that feeling.  It isn't pleasant.  I feel guilty for turning down plans to study, then staying home and not studying; I feel guilty for not bringing my lunch and spending too much money on it and then... the inevitable weight gain *frowns at waist* - I am going to have to start going to the gym again, but that takes time that I don't have,... I feel guilty for not spending enough time with my dog!  I feel guilty for everything right now, and you can joke all you want about good ol' Catholic guilt - but I didn't grow up experiencing guilt.  I was one of those people who rarely felt guilty even when she did something wrong.  (MOCK ALL YOU WANT BUT IT'S TRUE!)  Bah.

And of course, have I mentioned that, with the wonderful help of Jenn at Not Exactly Bento, feistyfoodie.com was launched?!  I recently passed 3 years as The Feisty Foodie (I food blogged intermittently for about a year, year and a half before that, but under a different name) and celebrated by launching the site finally after I'd said in January that I would do it this year!  Whoops!  It's pretty much operational and so purty, just a lil backend work needs to be done (so if you play around with it, let me know if there are any issues you come across, please!).  So go look and tell me if you like what you see :)

IMG_0143.JPG

So you see how my time is all squished up and just... yeah.  I'm sorry I don't have a bento today, and because I didn't cook all weekend, I probably won't have one for a while :(

IMG_0144.JPG

But you know, here are some pictures of my lunch on Saturday, between classes.  You'll see these pictures again when I post a product review I'm working on over at Feisty Foodie!  Almond butter and cherry butter on whole grain bread!  Pretty good, a new twist on the classic PB&J, yes?

It just looks like I won't be bento'ing for a few days more, and I know it's been a while, but I wanted to keep you all posted that I am not neglecting here, I just am barely able to eat between studying/working/schooling.  I am still here!  I am still trying to balance my time!  Anyone has any really good tips or suggestions on how to do this... I am ALL ears!

In any case, perhaps especially because I can't... think outside the lunchbox!!!

PS The reason Feisty Foodie is able to keep on with posts while I'm super busy is... whenever I have free time, I write posts and schedule them for the future.  Some of the posts going up are written nearly 2 months in advance (thus having ice cream posts when it's barely 50 outside...)!  Thankfully, before the latest blitz, I managed to schedule posts through almost all of October... phew!

Interim Post

The internet hates me today, and I'm kind of starting to hate it, too. Hmph.

I swear I made and brought a bento last week - pretty sure it was Friday - and I took pictures, got them all prepped and uploaded them, I could see them sitting in my account, and now they are gone. I did this twice already and am thoroughly annoyed without the patience to try again. I will post it when I can figure out why it isn't working or, if not why, just make it work again. Ugh.

(I also had a bento yesterday. That will get posted as well. Promise.)

I need a nap. And a Snuggie. Hehe.

In the meantime... think outside the lunchbox.

Technical Difficulties

We are currently experiencing technical difficulties...

I have photos of the most recent bento, but due to some changes around me, I am unable to post them... grrr. I hope to have this problem resolved shortly and thank you for your patience!

(This is what happens when you use three different computers concurrently and something goes wrong with one of them and just, ugh, well, yeah. Things are changing again. Boo.)

Think outside the lunchbox!!!

No bento, but a tracker

No bento today; it's a gym day, and there's no class today!  Spring break has officially started... no class until the 20th!  Yay!  One more bento for the week (tomorrow), then I'm off to Vegas, and I took off all of next week, so no bentos!  Posts will be up on Feisty Foodie of a very certain kind... so check in if you'd like!

So close to eating meat again!  :)

Also, I thought I'd share this, because I think it's kind of cool.

Cool, right?  I'll be posting this periodically so y'all can see what I've been doing.  Keep me motivated!

Think outside the lunchbox~!!!

Going (Temporarily) Meatless

I didn't have a bento yesterday because I wanted to eat lunch out (for reasons that will become clear shortly), and I don't have a bento today because I'm going to the gym.  So instead, I'll direct your attention over here, where the recipe for the soy glazed salmon and soba salad that I've been eating has been posted.

Also included oh-so-casually in that post is the announcement that from February 28th (tomorrow) until April 9th (about 5 weeks from now), I am going meatless.

I stress here that I am not doing this for Lent.  Lent is February 25th through April 12th.  The time frame is similar but not the same, so please don't tell me that I have gotten the dates wrong.  (Yes, a few people have told me this already and I figured I'd just pre-empt.)

While this clearly will affect both of my food sites, it will clearly affect this one much more directly and immediately (I post on Feisty Foodie with a week to two week delay).  It will become immediately evident how well (or not) I'm doing at this whole meatless thing.  Plus it'll plump up my 'vegetarian' label nicely, a much neglected tag as you can see the very first result under there, for some strange reason, is a bento that contains one vegetarian tier, sure, but the other tier is all meat!  Hmph!

Here is the full text of what's over at FF for those too lazy to click over:

"The story here is that, if you haven't already heard, I'm going mostly-meatless for most-of-Lent.  I'm not religious and the two aren't very related at all, just the time frames overlap (Lent is February 25th through April 12th; I'll be going meatless from February 28th [that's tomorrow] through April 9th), so it seems like a lot of people are assuming the two are related.  They really aren't.

It's just a challenge I'm posing to myself.  As anyone who eats with me or reads my food blog or talks about food with me, I am a huge meat eater.  I eat meat.  It's part of who I am, and I simply don't feel full if I don't have meat in my meal.  I like to have a meat, a veg and a starch in most meals, although I've been able to curb the starch portion sharply in recent years for a number of reasons... but meat has always been there for me.

On the other hand, I did grow up eating a lot of vegetables - I love vegetables cooked properly, or not cooked at all - but have fallen very far from that area in my life.  When I first moved away from my mother, I found I had a lot of trouble keeping fresh vegetables.  When I moved again, I had a bit of better luck (long story involving why I had trouble with that at the other place), but living with a veggie-phobe or veggie-hater really strained my desire to buy and keep fresh vegetables.  And now, living by myself, I'm half and half - it can be hard to eat all of any given vegetable before it goes bad, but I'm trying because I really do love eating fresh veggies, and I think I'm doing alright.

To encourage the latter and curb the former, I'm going to go completely meatless (NOT to be confused with vegetarian!) for this time period.  I will allow myself to eat fish, but meat - chicken, beef, pork, duck, etc. - is not allowed.  Dishes made with animal products and/or fats are allowable as well, just no bits of animal parts.  It's not vegetarianism by any means.  I expect my restaurant-dining to drop down to near-nil.

And so, to that end, I'm easing myself into things this week, with a very healthy, delicious and vegetarian side dish, along with a nice piece of fish.  (I've also slacked on eating fish since I moved away from my mother, but am working to fix that, clearly.)"

Wish me luck!  This is going to be one of the hardest things I've ever done.  While I can show an enormous amount of self-control, that generally applies to things I fully believe to be for my own betterment.  This will surely teach me a few things about myself... we'll see.

And on that note, I have not eaten chicken at all this week.  Sunday until now, I have been mostly meatless (eating lots of salmon, as you can see), eating only little bits of pork in a big batch of watercress soup I made on Sunday, and yesterday, I had a big burger stuffed with bacon (to go out with a bang you see!), sweetbreads for dinner, and tonight, I will surely eat something monstrously beefy just because I can.  Tomorrow, we begin.

Have a great weekend and happy bento, everyone!!!

Trying to Find a Balance

Nope, no bento today.

I'm trying to find a balance here, between work, school and packing myself food.  It's been a little wonky because:

  1. I don't always need two bentos on days I go to school.  In fact, only on Mondays do I need two (lunch & dinner).
  2. This is because on Tuesdays, I have phys ed class (it's part of the curriculum; please stop laughing!), so yesterday I ate some banana chips and some nuts.  That's probably what I'll be doing from now on in lieu of dinner on Tuesday nights, so no dinner bento.
  3. On Wednesdays, I take a late lunch hour and go to the gym to run.  Today I ate an orange, banana chips, and nuts (and feel super full... ugh)... no lunch bento on these days.

Yesterday, I decided I didn't want to eat a lunch made of what was in the fridge (a rarity, but it happens), so I planned on trying this new restaurant near my office, which I did.  That translates to no bentos for yesterday.  Also yesterday, I decided that before class tonight, I want to eat at this restaurant near my school, which translates to no bentos for today.

Yes, a little odd.

Tomorrow and Friday I won't be at work; tomorrow simply because I can, and Friday because I will be attending NY ComiCon all weekend.  So no bentos for the rest of the week!  I didn't mean to abandon you guys, I just kind of shifted things around this week.  Sorry!!!  I'm still here and I'm alive, struggling to juggle everything in my life right now... it's a bit difficult, but it'll happen, I just need to breathe and let time run its course.  Things'll sort themselves out, right?  Right!

Here's another photo of my basil and random green onion patch.  Basil's doing pretty well but you should see the basil I accidentally gave my mother - two small plants that are now about 8-10" tall each and have leaves that are 3-4" long.  None of mine grow that large!  Craziness!  The green onions just keep sprouting; they die after I cut off the new growth but still!  I've extended the life of my green onions so much!  :)

IMG_7330

I saw this when I was on the bus last night; it's hard to read but it says "S & M PHARMACY" and underneath "WE FLAVOR KID'S MEDICINE" which really disturbs me.  Am I sick or is the sign just wrong?!  Gross!

I will be back on Monday with two bentos!  Until then, happy eating and reading!  (The Feisty Foodie will continue to be updated, so pop on over there for some good eats!)

WRAGH!!!!!!!

Oh man, right after I basically wrote a love letter to my lunch jar set, I went to eat my lunch and... I've done this before, but usually it's not a big deal at all (probably because it's usually me trying to pack as much rice as possible in there on top of the curry), but I must have overfilled it just slightly with the wet ribollita... and the damn thing leaked a bit all over the inside of my insulated bag!  Worse, it's oily, so I don't know how to wash it (any suggestions?  I'm pretty sure the Japanese tag inside says no machine washing...)... and it even managed to seep through a bit into my tote bag!  Luckily, it's a freebie tote bag that I lug around since it's ginormous and fits everything I need on workdays, but still!

I emphasize this is my fault, but let this be a warning to you all: really, do not overfill these jars!!!  You will regret it!  Just pack it accordingly and you'll be fine - grrr on me!

Feisty Bento #275: Lots and lots and lots

Ok, to make up for my lack of real posts lately... sort of... I'm going to post a couple of big things.  Hehe!

So as you may or may not know, I have a dog whom I adore and cherish and she is my baby forever and ever.  Her name is Keywee (pronounced kiwi - I could bore you with the story of why it's spelled that way, but you might realize just how incredibly vain I really am then, hah).  Since I adopted her almost 7 years ago now, I have not eaten kiwis at all.  It wasn't a conscious decision on my part - and I didn't eat many before then anyway - but in the past 2-3 years, I've noticed that the sight of them on a cake or anywhere makes me cringe.  Thankfully, they're not too common in the things I eat, but that's just an odd thing about me.  Why does any of this matter?

... meet Sandwich.

Yes, darlings, meet the latest addition to our family.  Sandwich aka Sammy... a French bulldog + Beagle mix.  Isn't he ADORABLE?!  I will have better pictures of him eventually, but for now, this will have to do - he was pooped out from his exciting day!

Will I stop eating sandwiches?

NOT BLOODY LIKELY.  Hahahaha.  I love sandwiches!  I may stop calling them "sammies" though ;)

Today's bento:

Jar: ribollita - made with Italian sausage instead of bacon
Side cup: grape tomatoes

I also have an individual cup of Mandarin oranges on the side for dessert.  I would have put some more crushed pineapple, except I discovered the little cups on the side of this aren't quite leakproof when I last put crushed pineapple in there - the juice leaked out a bit and got all over the inside of my insulated lunchbag.  Boo.

So LitVit asked me recently about lunch jars aside from Mr. Bento.  The above lunch jar set is this one, which I spoke briefly about in that post.  Over a year later, here are my thoughts on this jar...

I love this set because it's perfect for packing soups, stews, curries, whatever that you want to keep warm.  I run my hot water tap for a minute or so, then fill this and set it aside while I prepare everything else.  Things stay hot in it, especially if they're very hot when I pack it.  Once or twice, they've actually remained hot enough to almost burn my lips when I first open it, and they stay warm throughout my lunch.  I did notice, however, that the more liquid an item is, the hotter it stays - for example, I've packed regular rice (mixed with other stuff) in it before, and it did not stay hot.  It was warm, sure, but not hot-hot like a stew would be, and like how I expect my lunch today to remain.

I also love this set because it's metal - which means it is super easy to clean (in my opinion - I obviously hand wash my bento items because I have no dishwasher, and they are mostly plastic, but I really do dislike washing plastic items because once oily, they are a PAIN to clean properly, and sometimes they stain).

HOWEVER, the largest downside I've found to this set is its size.  At 560 ml total, it's respectable for a woman my age, height, and weight, and perhaps not bad for losing weight, but the main jar is only 240 ml, which means you aren't getting a ton of stew or soup or whatever it is you'd like to pack, and in fact, the bulk of your meal is really coming from the side cups (160 ml each x2 = 320).  As I'm trying to lose weight, this isn't necessarily a huge deal, and for me, the pros definitely outweigh the cons, hands down.

Having said that, there are also several alternatives if you want larger bento jars - the JAR portion itself, not just the entire capacity.  You may have noticed that I do have another bento lunch jar (again, besides Mr. Bento).  The jar of this one clocks in at approximately 290 ml, with the side cups coming in at 165 ml and 200 ml.  (Since the Zojirushi website uses ounces, the conversions might be slightly off, give or take .5 ml.)  So the total is approximately 655 ml, again with the side cups bearing the most of the food, and that's a bit more than I might want to eat on any given day.  I occasionally pack this accordingly - using only one cup, or packing something that's light on calories, high on nutrition, etc.

One other major problem with this set that I've found is that with the exception of last week's pasta, I've had general issues with keeping things warm in this jar.  Interestingly, that pasta was not liquidy at all... but the set itself is very different from the other one.  It's larger not just in capacity, but in size - the jar is a metal exterior shell that I pre-heat with hot tap water, and then has plastic insert that you place inside the empty metal shell with the actual food in it.  This goes to my dislike of plastics because they stain, and a lot of the soups, stews, curries I make are tomato based or - well, curry! which is also staining.  So far, I haven't had any issues because I wipe the jar out when I'm done eating, but I could see this being an issue with other people.  Or not.  Depends on how anal retentive you are, I suppose.  So I can't really recommend this set based on my own experiences with the heat retention so far.  I do admit that since I first began using it, when I reach for a lunch jar, I always reach for the smaller red set first.  Not just because of its physical size, but because of my past history with it, the weight of the Zojirushi set (which is quite heavy), and the amount of food it holds (too much).  I tend to only take this one out when the other one is dirty, so perhaps my limited experience with it has also tainted my view of it - maybe it holds heat just fine, just that I did it wrong the first few times and it's actually a great set.  I mean, it is a great set, just that I mis-used it initially.  I don't know.

So, let's say you really want to pack almost entirely soup/stew/curry and just a little of a side dish.  My brother actually has a solution for that sort of lunch (scroll down past the first bunch, that's just a review on the entire thing, till you get to where it says "Modded Mr. Bento") - without requiring you to buy a new lunch jar whatsoever.  He has had excellent results with using a quart container - one of those cheapy plastic numbers you get at Chinese takeout all the time - slipped inside Mr. Bento with hot food.  He says that the Mr. Bento keeps that hot as well!  How awesome is that?!  That totally makes the Mr. Bento worth the $40 USD or so that it costs, right?  I mean, personally, that's still too much food for me, but my brother is a big guy, and you don't have to fill it all the way to the top, right?  ;)  This also works for my problem with plastic - if it stains or is just too greasy to wash properly - just throw it away!  (Well, in light of our environment, I hope you use it a few times first, but you know.)

I hope this helps LitVit and anyone who was thinking about lunch jars, pros, cons, etc.  These are just some of my thoughts on the containers I've had experience with - I've actually only used my Mr. Bento once because it is way too large for me to comfortably eat in one sitting, but I did find that my food stayed warm with it and if you pack half of it with snacks - or perhaps pack two meals in it - it's not that bad.

And if you want a lot of in depth examination into heat retention, Biggie has a great post about that specifically, but also lots of information about lunch jars in general over her entire site

--- What, you thought I was done rambling on here?  I've got one more.  It's not a big thing to me, but while I was doing it this past weekend, I thought, "Oh hey, maybe people will be interested in this."  Sometimes I find myself casually mentioning something I do to make my life easier, and the response is usually at least one person will be surprised and happy that I shared... so I thought I'd do that here.  Maybe you all already know it and I'm building this up.  Maybe it won't help any of you.  BUT IF IT HELPS JUST ONE PERSON, I'll be happy I shared :)

As you probably know, freezing food is a really big help.  And I've mentioned that I have not mastered the art of cooking for one - I grew up in a family of 5, and cooked for 5 people always with the intention of having a little bit leftover (my family is big on excess - which you know, if you read Feisty Foodie at all, we do our meals up big time - I mean, I grew up being taught-by-example that it is ALWAYS better to have leftovers than to run out of food).  SO, as such, I've been freezing a lot of food lately instead of cooking something and eating it for two weeks straight.  Not that I would mind, but this helps me also on weeks when I'm just not feeling the cooking thing, I'll still have something to eat for dinner or lunch, right?

I've frozen Japanese curry with great success before, so I've been thinking of what other kinds of stews/soups/curries that might hold up well to freezing.  So I froze some leftover beef stew in individual sandwich bags/serving sizes, and some of that creamy chicken stew, and I made a ton of that ribollita above so I'll be freezing the leftovers of that as well.  What's my point, you ask?

It's not that easy ladling these liquidy items into sandwich bags without getting it everywhere.  The first few times I tried, I got curry all over the outside of the bags, the part where you "zip" the bag, the part where you open the bag... it was a mess.  I was pretty pissed (even though I realized later that once you freeze it, it'll peel off so no curry will be wasted, hehe).  I really hate getting my hands messy when I'm doing something that, by all accounts, shouldn't be messy!  And I really hate getting the outside of containers dirty because it gets everything else dirty too (I do wipe them because I'm very anal retentive about that).

So I figured out one day that instead of holding the bag with one hand and trying to fling stew into it with the other... I could just hang the bag inside my mug and it would keep it open for me!  Easy, pour one two three and then zip, it's all clean and can just be popped in the freezer straightaway!  NICE!

I literally just open the bag, push my hand in to open it up, then push it into the mug, push down the top of the bag so it doesn't get in the way of the ladle, and then I take it out, push excess air out and freeze.

Maybe it's not a stroke of genius for you, but it's made my life so much easier since then; now the bags stay clean on the outside, and stew/soup/curry only goes on the inside of the bag where it belongs!

Alright, I've probably rambled on enough here, so I'll let you go.  Oh what a coincidence, it's now lunchtime ;)

HAPPY BENTO~!!!

Feisty Bento #232: Something old looks like something new

Top tier: mixed veggies, miso mushrooms, mango pudding, caramelized onions
Bottom tier: spicy chicken & bean stew; pesto pasta salad

Aren't those mixed veggies so pretty?  I don't remember the brand, but I bought this 16 oz. bag of mixed veggies because they have lima beans in it, too, and I like lima beans (there used to be a snack, I have no idea where I got them, but it was dried lima beans with a bit of salt, and they were delicious, wish I could find them again now!).  Anyway, I just popped them in a bit of boiling water with salt for about 2 minutes, then drained it and tossed it with butter.  I am so happy they put corn in there, since (aside from my love affair with corn recently, see all the corn in this box?) the colors just pop with that bit of yellow.

The caramelized onions are leftover from the steak dinner I made on Friday night.  That's the last of the chicken stew, but not the last of the pasta salad, so it may make one more appearance here...

By the way, I have one tip/suggestion for everyone, bento-maker or not.  If you're making a big pot of anything - stews, chilis, soups - to be eaten as bento or to be reheated throughout a week for easy dinners, the first night when you make it, cook it to the bare minimum of done-ness to your tastes.  As you reheat it, the veggies and most meats, starches will continue to cook, and that just leads to a disgusting mess at the end.  Well, some people like the texture at the end, but it really depends on you.  I'm just saying that this is a good rule of thumb because at one point, it'll be the perfect done-ness for you, but the other times will have to be palatable to you, and you shorten that time if you cook it to the right done-ness the first night (unless you're like me and like your veggies, meats and starches all just this side of al dente).

This can also apply to making mini-meatloaves, meatballs, hamburgers, etc. or even steak, chicken, pork for bento.  I mentioned this practice here - I made pork chops and purposely undercooked all but one (the one I ate that night), so that when I microwaved them in the mornings before packing, they would finish cooking and not dry out.  I detest overcooked, dried out meats although I'm sure that is what some people's palates prefer.  This works for me; food safety note: every meat has a temperature it must reach internally to be considered "safe" - even pork has this, you can reach that temperature without cooking it totally white in the center.  As a somewhat confident/experienced cook in that arena, I am fine with taking pork, steak, even burgers off the fire before they are no longer pink in the center, and setting them aside to be stored in the fridge.  If you are not that comfortable, please Google the temperatures each meat must reach within and use a trusty meat thermometer to check when you've reached it.  Or please don't use this tip about purposely undercooking your meat; I'd rather eat dry meat (add some gravy or sauce in a cute little bottle! perfect excuse to buy more accessories) than get sick from improperly cooked/stored meat.

Anyway, that's my two cents today.  HAPPY BENTO!!!

Feisty Bento #229: Gorgeous Bento & Contest

I am immensely pleased with my bento today. Look at it! Wouldn't you be, too? I can't wait to eat it, even though it is smaller than I'm used to. I love the cheery yellow box (new purchase from my recent Bay Area trip, which I will be talking about in detail one of these days!). I love the colors and the food and everything, even though it's more frozen stuff than I'd have liked. Whatever. It's gorgeous!

I love it so much, I took extra pics. :)

Starting from the left is pork & chicken gyoza, with a small bottle of gyoza sauce tucked in. I've got sliced green bell peppers tucked in all around, a small mango pudding for dessert, and a few pieces of kara-age. In the bear cup is this spicy chicken & bean... stew? that I made last night, recipe to come on Feisty Foodie. It is DELICIOUS. The color scheme was so drab I had to punch it up with the bell peppers...

And look what I also picked up on my trip to San Francisco! I went into Mitsuwa and this was hanging on the freezer door by the frozen gyoza I adore (which is so much cheaper over there, it's not. even. funny). I had to bring one back, scan it, and share with y'all, but funny thing: Biggie just posted about this contest today, too! Go, enter! I'm entering this bento, totally (it's nearly all Ajinomoto products, actually - I do prefer their gyoza over JFC, and their kara-age is yummy but expensive. And since I'm eating their gyoza, I buy their gyoza sauce. Haha).

As always, peoples, HAPPY BENTO!!!

Bento, O-bento, I have loved

I was browsing through my old bento pics, desperately looking for Entry #2 to Not Exactly Bento's Photography contest.  As I scrolled through, though, I came up with so many that I liked, that I decided against a 2nd entry.  The thing is, when someone says "What was your favorite bento EVER?" the picture that springs to mind is the one I already entered.  So I'll leave it at that, even though these are all lovely (and one of these definitely would be my 2nd favorite bento ever, if only - well, you'll see) as well, I just can't choose.

I guess this can be a "Just Over A Year, Just Over 200 Bentos, A Retrospective" haha.

Feisty Bento #4 - the colors of the Italian flag.  I'm not Italian, but... so bright and pretty!

Feisty Bento #9 - I just love the wide variety here, and all the different offerings I've got going on, including fruit.

Feisty Bento #24 - I thought a sandwich bento would be boring, but I was wrong!  Simple, fast and so yummy!

Feisty Bento #72 is one of my favorite bentos of all time.  Everything "matches" - it's all Japanese cuisine, though the colors are off, it was so delicious to eat.  Sometimes I wonder why I don't do more like this, then I remember how many carbs were in that lunch.  :)

Feisty Bento #85 - I love the bright, popping colors here.  Red white and blue, even though this was dead of winter, so not Fourth of July, I can show a little patriotism, right?  Hehe.

Feisty Bento #100 - This marked a milestone for me.  And a WHOLE lot of food was had!

Feisty Bento #106: Wow, was that a good lunch, again.  And my Lock & Lock, how I loved you so (before I found out you're actually two 475 ml tiers...).

Feisty Bento #152 - I just love variety.  I love mushrooms.  I love steak.  All makes a great bento!

Feisty Bento #163: I just like Asian styled bentos? and if you stick croquettes in there, I'm doubly happy.  Haha.

Feisty Bento #175: Though the colors are dark, the food was extra specially delicious.

Feisty Bento #176: Look at those colors again!  I love it!  And the variety!

Feisty Bento #188: I loved the miso mushrooms so much, I keep making them... and that fried rice... and kalbi... omfg, so good!  Leftovers at their finest, I tell you.

Feisty Bento #208: A more recent bento, but I liked the colors and I love the fun flavors in this box.

Feisty Bento #209: Because... who puts Serrano ham in a bento?  Seriously, WHO BUT ME?!  Haha just kidding.  But it was good and I liked it.  And the miso mushrooms again...

I hope you enjoyed this brief retrospective at some of the bento, oh-bento I've made for myself in the past year and almost two months that I have particularly liked... what are your favorite bentos?  Of yours or of mine, I'm not picky :)

Everyone, happy bento and have a GREAT food weekend!!!

Feisty Bento #209: Cheeses of the World

Sorry about yesterday, I had a trying Sunday and didn't manage to get the energy up to cook at midnight just for bento purposes.  I went out for dinner last night, too, but on the way home, I stopped by my favoritest Korean Kwik-E-Mart (not really, it's just a great place that's open super late and has all sorts of Korean snacks - like gimbap - you can buy and plop right into bento).  Anywho, so that made bento packing super easy this morning...

Top tier: !!! piave wrapped in jamon serrano; sauteed spinach; miso mushrooms
Bottom tier: gimbap; Woorijip "spicy" chicken

Okay, a quick note about the jamon serrano and piave.  A few years ago, I went to Barcelona with a group of girlfriends.  When we hunted down a sort of Dunkin' Donuts like place (not really; no donuts in place, but a chain coffee shop is what I'm going for), we all ordered what appeared to be a standard breakfast sandwich... except no eggs (and it turns out, eggs aren't really breakfast fare in Barcelona).  It was a medialuna lookin' thing... a croissant, if you will, but smaller and slightly harder, with a few slices of meat on it.  Most of us wound up picking - by pointing - the jamon serrano (Serrano ham) version, which turned out to be whoaaa so good.  Serrano ham thinly sliced with so much ribbons of fat, melts slightly in your mouth as you eat it, creating this rich, meaty, delicious... mmm.  It's basically a Spanish version of prosciutto; the curing processes are similar, though I emphasize that they are different, because prosciutto makes me sick.  We all fell in love with it and plotted ways to take back an entire leg on the plane... which didn't happen.  It turns out that until fairly recently (I just tried to look it up, but can't find the exact when, sorry!) - within my lifetime, anyway - it was illegal to import Serrano ham into the US.  I guess "so good, it should be illegal" applied ;)

Piave - a type of hard Italian cheese.  I have been exploring my neighborhood far more than I did while growing up here - which you may notice from the recent spate of posts on Feisty Foodie all focused on Forest Hills - and discovere a store called "Cheeses of the World".  I walked in and was greeted with the most deliciously pungent cheese smells, and they were selling all the accoutrements that pair well with cheese - olives, cured meats, honeys, jams, breads... yum, I think I could make an entire picnic basket from this place!  Anyway, when we went in, I was immediately drawn to the Serrano ham of course (which I'd previously only been able to purchase via FreshDirect)... but then BF and I were looking at the cheeses, and the cheesemonger came over to ask us if we had questions, so we talked a little bit and he suggested the piave and gave us each a piece to try.  Slightly grainy, but with a delicious sharpness to it yet similar enough to parmagiano-reggiano or pecorino-romano (BF's favorite hard Italian cheeses) that we weren't completely put off, we immediately bought a half pound.

I'll be doing a full write-up of the place on Feisty Foodie eventually, after I go back, sample some more stuff, buy some more stuff, take more pictures and just get a feel for the place better.

I think I've gone on and on enough here, so ciao for now!

Happy bento!!! can't wait to eat my lunch today... hehehe

Not Exactly Bento Photo Contest Entry!

For entry into Not Exactly Bento's bento photography contest!

I first posted this bento over a year ago, but the colors draw me back, over and over and over again.  I don't even like orange as a color normally (I don't wear orange, that's for sure), but I love cantaloupe and this was just a really good bento.

Yummy!

Left box, clockwise: shelled edamame; cantaloupe; gyoza with sauce in a pig shaped bottle; Asian style potato salad
Right box: three onigiri (two with salmon+wasabi+mayo, rolled in masago); inari sushi with masago topping; three slices of takuan (pickled radish)

Ahhh, those were the days, my first bento set everrr, and a box that looked so tiny but really, that adds up to 720ml!  I eat 500ml now!  That was the start of my bento journey, to losing close to 20lbs... sniff, sniff, sorry, I'll stop being nostalgic now!  A big hearty thanks to Not Exactly Bento for a GREAT contest!!!

HAPPY BENTO!!!

Bento (Links) I Have Loved

So, I have no bento today as I have very fun and exciting lunch plans (that you'll hear about later on The Feisty Foodie, I promise). So instead, I'm going to share with you a few bento-related links that I have seen lately that I adore!

At the risk of sounding like a total fan-girl, there may or may not be multiple links from the same sites. I don't read that many bento sites because I don't know of THAT many (so please, feel free to share if you know of any that I'm missing!), and sometimes, the same person just posts so many good things in a short time span, I just want to share the love.

JustBento is freaking awesome. She's been doing a chicken-for-bento-purposes series lately, and I love it; I like chicken thighs a lot but sometimes you get bored of making it the same way all the time, even if it IS super 'lish. Here's a bunch of her recent recipes:

Speaking of NotExactlyBento, another awesome bento site. Her photographs turn me green with envy, and she is super friendly and helpful to a dumbarse like myself who has loads of questions on web-junk. AND SHE DOESN'T SEEM TO MIND! my dumb questions or my long, rambling comments... :)

  • Not Exactly Bento Photo Contest That's right, she's holding an awesome contest! Deadline is August 22, so head on over and enter! Wait, don't enter! I want to win one of the sweet bento sets she's giving away! Oops!
  • Blog tips Okay, so this isn't strictly bento-related (not exactly bento, right? heh heh... heh?), but it's an awesome page Jenn's just started on that I know I will be coming back to again and again. She's been posting tips and hints on how to get started with your own webpage, and blogging tips in general, just awesome.

Pretty much if you're in the bento blogging world, you've heard of Lunch in a Box. Biggie is like, the Momma of all Bento Bloggers, or I think so anyway. I'm a TOTAL fangirl for her. She's awesome, friendly, nice, and just, well, her blog rocks. I'm sure anyone reading my bento blog (who bento's and isn't just reading because we're friends) has heard of her, so this might be redundant, but here are some recent posts I've especially loved.

  • Organization Series I am pretty sure this link will take you to a capture of all of her latest endeavors getting that darned pesky bento overflow problem under control. Nearly everyone I know who bentos tends to um, go a little nuts with the bento purchases initially and Biggie has a good idea of how to tame that wicked stack of boxes you've got.
  • Bento FAQ Bento newcomers, never fear, here is a comprehensive list of links to the answers to pretty much all of your questions (What IS bento? I don't want to make cute food, can I still bento? How big a container should I use? and more!). AWESOME.
  • Bento Store Locator Self explanatory, and for someone not living in an area highly populated with Japanese people or at least the stores, this is wonderful. I actually have printed out lists before and done "bento scavenger hunts" in NYC. Not as much fun as you'd think, since I usually come up empty-handed from high prices or low stock or both. This helps with that problem.

Ok, I've probably blathered long enough now, you're all bored. This post actually took me longer to whip up than a normal bento post, haha! Tomorrow: back to your regularly scheduled program.

Happy bento!!!

Feisty Bento #194: Something AWESOME, and super exciting news!!!

I had a good, albeit busy, weekend... started off with the farewell bar bash of one of my closest coworkers... I've known him for 2-3 years now, and in that time, we've become really close; going on double dates, bemoaning a lot of bad things, sharing a drink whenever possible, throwing parties for people just as an excuse to have a party, and overall... just becoming good friends.  His life path is taking him somewhere I will never go, but I wish him the best of luck and hope that in the future, our paths will cross again and put us in the same city.

Anyway, moving away from the sadness of goodbyes (funny, I realized I didn't even really say goodbye to him... probably because I'm seeing him one last time before he leaves), Saturday saw us (bf & I) at a friend's BBQ.  Ever since I saw this link on Serious Eats, sent it to BF and said "Want to do this?" I've been dying for an occasion to, well, do it!  So we did.

In all its glory... unfortunately, our hostess's blender fritzed out, so we had to hand mash most of the watermelon to get some form of juice out of it.  Also- I wanted vodka instead of rum, thinking rum would be too strongly flavored, so we used vodka instead.  And added ice inside of the watermelon to superchill it.

In action - shot 1

In action - shot 2.  He doesn't have the faucet open all the way, thus the weak stream, and I think it was getting low at that point.  I drank a LOT of it.  Haha.

Today's bento.

Top tier: kickin' chicken; baby carrots
Bottom tier: English cucumber slices; celery sticks; roasted pine nut hummus for the veggies

Also, head over to The Feisty Foodie for some super exciting news!!!  How COOL is that?!?!?!

And if you're in the NYC area, enter my contest to win free lunch!  Healthy lunch, no less!

As always - happy bento!!!

HAPPY ONE YEAR BENTO-VERSARY TO ME!!!

Wow, it's been exactly a year since the first time I put together a bento. (Ironically, I am making homemade kalbi again today. Guess it's a 4th of July kind of thing for me?) I'm super happy that I've stuck with it - and will be sticking with it - and thrilled with all the weight I've lost - and will continue to lose. Bento has been a great way for me to focus and to eat healthier than I would if I didn't bento. I know the past few weeks have been a struggle for me, but it should get better again, I promise, knowing what I do about the changes in my own life. To everyone who reads, thank you for being with me through this journey - stick around, there's more to come! I wish you the happiest of bento, always... even when, like me, you can't be happy, at least your bento can... and maybe it will rub off on you :)

MK Bento

I've been really remiss with my bento'ing... I just can't wake up lately, I'm so exhausted, so tired, so... emotionally strained.  I've been going through some ish and it's just... wreaked havoc on my desire to get out of bed, put together a lunch, and go to work...

Anyway, a friend of mine - cutest story EVER - told me a few months ago that her brother showed her this website that showcased some crazy girl's bento every day... and she was browsing around it when she suddenly realized... the crazy girl was ME!  I was really excited cuz, well, it's so cool to kind of think, oh hey... my friends found my site without me directing them to it!  (Plus it made me realize that I don't really talk about my food blogs, nearly all the friends in that group of friends didn't know I had food blogs, oops.)

So this same friend mentioned that she was starting to get into bento...

... and then she took a few pictures...

... then she sent them to me...

... and she said I could post them!  So, even though I can't offer you my bento, here are pictures of MK Bento, for the first time ever!  (Sorry I don't really have details on what's in them!  Speak up if you're reading, though, MK, if I get anything wrong!)

Whole wheat pancakes and syrup

Dumplings & broccoli

Looks like... dim sum?, fried rice onigiri, and some greens in the lower left hand corner

Noodles... with some bok choi on the right

More noodles, and I think inari sushi?

Meatballs with cute picks, over rice and some green beans

Broccoli, sausages, noodles, and look!  Little ocotopus hot dog/sausages!

Creamed spinach, orange segments, and I believe those are soba nests with soba dipping sauce!  Yum!

Creamed spinach, lo mein, and fried dumplings.  Yum!!!

MK actually goes to school and commutes, so I can understand why it might be hard for her to blog about her lunches, and I'm only too happy to help her out by doing it for her!  But encouraging comments are welcome so that she might continue bentoing... hopefully she'll be able to even after she starts working.  Yay for MK!

Always, happy bento!!!

Feisty No-Bento

Hey all, sorry for the lack of bento today, but I've got lunch plans. Also, I'm hoping to announce the winners of my contest (voting ended officially on Friday!) but I'd like to email them before I do so to finalize one teensy detail. But... since my move... I have no internet access at home. And no Gmail access at work. See the problem? Bahhh... I'm trying to work a fix out temporarily, but so far, no luck. Bear with me on this, k? Thanks...!

Feisty Bento #125: Truly Southern Bento & Contest Round Up

Top: mac & cheese; pulled pork over crumbled cornbread (to absorb the wonderful juices and um, fat)
Bottom: ribs, meat cut from the bones

I met up with the girls last night for a catch-up dinner, and we had... barbecue.  One of the things I simply adore without reason, but I'm sure no one wants to hear about that - full details and write-up on the restaurant to come on Feisty Foodie - you're all waiting for the CONTEST ROUND UP!!!

So without further adieu, here we go~

Coming from Jessica over at Bento for Vegans, we've got "OH NO!!!" where the big mean banana is trying to eat the little orange segments who are terrified.  For more details, and a delicious sounding recipe for the mushroom sautee you see on the left on the bottom, click on over.  She's hoping for the red apple box...

This "red and green bento" from Ginger & Liana contains, in her words:

in gladware is slowcooker chicken and sausage jambalaya, with kimchee and edamame, grapes and apple rabbits.

Slowcooker Jambala (sorry not exact measurements - we usually cook to whim)
2 cans diced tomatoes
1 can smashed tomatoes
1 finely minced onion
1 diced green bell pepper
chicken (2-4 breasts)
sausage (4 links cajun seasoned)
Oregano, chili powder or peppers, thyme, and what ever else you want seasoned to taste.

saute chunks of chicken and sausage until there's a good sear. dump all ingredients in slowcooker and set on high for 4 hours. and that's about it.

They're hoping for the green grape box!

Lisa from Lunch Bucket Bento enters her "Phat Lunch" with a recipe for peanut butter stuffed dates!  Sounds pretty yummy, though my peanut allergy might not really agree with that, it does look fantastic!  She wants the PowerPuffGirls bento!

Megan tells us, "This is a photo of a lunch I made for myself. I recently started graduate school and am finding money and time a little tight. Packing (bento-style) lunches is not only nutritious and easy, but also a great way to increase my productivity as I can eat and work in my office at the same time... :P

I've attached the picture. I've creatively titled it "Hungry Grad Student's Lunch" and in it there is sliced kiwi, mango, and shells in an alfredo sauce. For the shells, I mixed together a few tablespoons melted butter, 1 small carton of heavy cream, and a handful of Parmesan cheese. I boiled the pasta and poured the sauce over top. This all went into my Lock & Lock square container with 4 removable trays and my BuiltNY lunch tote."  She hopes for - uh oh, this is our first repeat request ~ the red apple bento!

Our friend Mer from Playing with my Food obviously knows a thing or two about odds & probability and decided to enter three different bentos to increase her chances!  Here's the first!

and the second

not least of all, but the last, the third.  Each post contains links to her own recipes for at least one component of each bento, and don't they look yum?  Honestly, I aspire to one day make some of the things she does so easily- homemade bread!  Hummus!  My goodness!  If she wins~ she would like the green grape bento... oops, that's another duplicate request- or the banana one!

Our only overseas entrant, and our only food art entry comes from Laura over at Musings of a Modified Mummy in the UK!  For details, click here!  Who doesn't like SpongeBob SQUAREPANTS!  Who lives in a pineapple under the sea, SpongeBob Squarepants!  Yay!  She would also like the banana bento!  Eek, looks like I didn't pick up enough of the ones everyone wanted...

Jenn - who for some reason thinks this is Not Exactly Bento! - gives us chicken & quinoa (pronounced keen-wah - impress your friends at your next party with your knowledge!) and wishes for the red apple bento.  Ack... lots of requests for those three Putifresh boxes!

Last but definitely not least - in fact, my very first entry! - is Allison from SushiDay.  Quite a bit of her bento comes homemade, and boy does it look delicious.... It's got nearly everything meant to be in a bento!  In any case, for recipes, click on over and see what the sushi of the day is!  She requests the green grape bento as well!

Ok people, the vote is open!  You can vote for yourself; you can defend why one is better than the other; you can even tell us you want a different box!  I'll tell you this: no one requested the first box that was offered, and someone's going to win it!  Take that how you will!  As always... happy bento!!!

***Voting will end in a week!
